Ionic bonds are formed when an electron moves from one atom to another, and covalent bonds are formed when two different atoms share one or more pair of electrons. The closer the difference between electrons of an atom is over the periodic table (or the smaller difference between electronegativity) tends to be more covalent than ionic. Enter an ionic equation (solubility states are optional) to calculate its complete and net ionic equations. For ionic bonds the covalent character can be determined by polarizing power and polarizability but even then those originate from the atom's electronegativity in the first place so I'm not too sure if there is anything but knowing trends in electronegativity that apply to the character of a bond.
